Mr Abdul-Wahab made the call in a statement delivered on his behalf at Bawku by Alhaji Basiru Aludiba who represented him during a presentation of a total of 750 bags of 25 kilogrammes of sugar to the Upper East Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) for onward distribution to party faithfuls and Muslim communities in the Region.

About 90 boxes of sugar were also distributed to some residents of the Upper East Region living in Accra.

Breakdown

The breakdown of the distributions were as follows: 400 bags of 25kg of sugar went to the NPP Upper East Regional Secretariat for onward distribution to party persons, 200 bags of the 25kg sugar was given to the Bawku Muslim community, while 100 bags went to the Bawku branch of the NPP.

About 70 bags were presented to the Pusiga community and NPP party with 50 bags donated to the Binduri community and party.

The Garu community and party among other beneficiaries received 30 bags of sugar.

The breakdown of the donation the CEO made in Accra were also as follows: 30 boxes of sugar to residents in Aveno,10 boxes of sugar to Nima residents, 20 boxes of sugar to traders at the Onion market at Agbogbloshie, 20 boxes of sugar to traders at the Ashaiman Cattle market and 10 boxes of sugar to the Bawku lorry station located behind the Children's Hospital in Accra.

Mr Abdul-Wahab indicated through his representative that “even though the items were not enough to reach everyone in the beneficiary communities, it was very necessary that we shared the little we have”.

He said for the past two fasting years he had made it a duty to share the little he had with the poor to help them prepare for the all important worship of fasting.

“As a person who grew up in a Zongo community, I understand what it means to cushion one another in this spiritual month. Apart from meeting the needs of the people, I also find it a spiritual fulfillment in giving out to the needy especially in this holy month”, the CEO further stressed.

Appreciation

The Bawku Chief Imam, Alhaji Mohammed Murtala Imam on behalf of the recipients, thanked the CEO for the gesture but reminded Muslims that the month of Ramadan was a sacred month in which Muslims fast for thirty days in obedience to the call of Allah.

He said it was thus, a pillar of Islam, and the third most important act of faith according to some Islamic commentaries.

The Chief Imam further noted that Muslims were therefore expected to increase their act of worship both at day and night including giving out to the needy, feeding the poor and being kind in all forms towards one another.

Some Muslim community members at Bawku later expressed gratitude to the NAFCO CEO saying “this sacred gesture keeps increasing since he started the exercise; the CEO is therefore a benevolent individual worthy of emulation”.
