How it works

1. Schools that sign on to the service will issue unique identities comprising an ID number, a unique name and a code to prospective student.

2.The student/parent/guardian requires a data-enabled computer to access the service.

3. MTN will give school authorities access to an application which will display the number of students who are available on the platform and the payment each individual student has made.

Launching the service at a brief ceremony in Accra, Mr. Eric Nsarkoh, Sales and Distribution Executive of MTN Ghana said the company in colaboration with its technology partners and banks, have designed the school fees service to give parents the ease and convenience of paying their wards' fees from the comfort of their homes and offices.

"We began partnering with nine commercial banks who we considerd very strategic in our drive to make Mobile Money more accessible to people. We continue to design more relevant services on the plattorm aimed at giving the customer more options to use payment services on our system," said Eric Nsarkoh.

He underscored the need for people to subscribe to the Mobile Money School Fees Payment Service and benefit from its concomitant benefits.

"The impact of the Mobile Money and school fees service to the economic growth of the country cannot be underestimated. Apart from the convenience it creates for individual customers, it is certainly a cheaper and a safer way of transferring money to loved ones and associates," he said.

He said the company's aim for introducing the cash management system into the Ghanaian market was to provide an opportunity to the 'unbanked' to transfer money to friends and loved ones using their mobile phone.

Mr Nsarkoh said that the sole objective of MTN is to make mobile money the leading mode of payment in Ghana and encouraged people to register for mobile money and sign up to all the services that are available to enjoy the convenience it brings.

So far 30 senior high schools and  three tertiary institutions have enrolled unto the school fees payment platform. The company also boasts of over one million active Mobile Money customers, with over 7.5 million transactions recorded monthly.
