A 20-year old mother, Ayishetu Fuseini, who killed her one-and-a-half-month-old baby girl by slitting her throat at Garu-Duri in the Upper East Region has been remanded in police custody at Zebilla in the Bawku West District.
The Garu-Tempane District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christian Dogbatse, who made this known to the Daily Graphic, indicated that the suspect was arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Bawku on Monday.
He explained that Ms Fuseini allegedly killed her baby to escape humiliation from her family members for her inability to name the baby’s father.
The suspect, who is unemployed, told the police in Garu that when the child was born, family members confronted her to disclose the baby’s father, and when she failed to do so, they began to taunt and call her names.
Decision
According to the suspect, she became frustrated and decided to end the baby’s life, since she could not support her upkeep.
ASP Dogbatse further indicated that Ms Fuseini, in her caution statement to the police, said she got pregnant out of wedlock in Kumasi where she had gone to do menial jobs.
However, she alleged that the man responsible for the pregnancy denied responsibility and so she had to go back home to have the baby.
ASP Dogbatse said the baby had since been buried after post-mortem examination on it.
He cautioned people to desist from such barbaric actions in times of difficulty, since they could always seek counsel from religious leaders and elders in their communities.
