More security personnel deployed to Dollar Power

More security personnel have been deployed by the Bole Bamboi District Security Committee (DISEC) to Dollar Power, a border town in the Bole Bamboi District in the Northern Region, following the killing of a soldier and a market woman.

The move forms part of measures by the committee to ensure safety and security, as well as contain galamsey operations in the area.

It is also intended to help apprehend the unknown assailants who allegedly attacked members of the DISEC that led to the death of Staff Officer Owusu last Friday.

The police have refuted claims that the assailants are rebels from neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire.

It has also emerged that the assailants had earlier shot and killed a market woman before attacking the members of the Bole DISEC.

Appeal to residents

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, who disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic, appealed to residents of the town to assist the police with vital information to bring the perpetrators to book.

He said the two soldiers who sustained injuries were in critical condition and had been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

 Ambush

Members of the DISEC, including the soldier, whose name was given by the police only as Staff Officer Owusu, and the Bole Bamboi District Chief Executive, Mr James Jaga, had crossed the White Volta at Ntereso, a farming community in the district, last Friday, on their way to Dollar Power but were ambushed by some unknown assailants who opened fire on them, resulting in the soldier’s death.

Two other military officers, whose identities were not immediately given, and a Bole Bamboi District Fire Officer, whose name was given only as Wiafe, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Bole Government Hospital for treatment.

Dollar Power is noted for galamsey activities in the district. Apart from, the place is also bedevilled with chieftaincy and land disputes.

Members of the DISEC were going to Dollar Power to meet with the chiefs and people of the town and assess the security situation in the area when they were attacked.
