The programme will cover Accra and also focus on markets with refuse collection points, communities with heaps of refuse and some drains.

Speaking at the launch in Accra last Saturday, September 7, 2013, the Managing Director of Zoom Alliance, Mr Agyenim Baoteng Adjei, said the modules for the exercise included intensive weekend clean-up exercises and mop ups as well as monitoring and enforcement of good sanitation practices at operational sites on weekdays.

Mr Adjei said the exercise would also reclaim evacuated lands by filling them with laterite and leveling them, identify drains for dredging and clean-ups as well as maintaining security presence to deter people from dumping refuse indiscriminately after the exercise.

The managing director stated that their expectation “after the exercise is that all refuse collection points at identified marketplaces would have been cleared, drains desilted, refuse transported to a final disposal site and the public educated to avoid indiscriminate littering.”

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, who launched the project, said the exercise was timely and would help clean the city which was engulfed in filth.

He also said environmental cleanliness was a shared responsibility and, therefore, everyone must be involved in the exercise.

He expressed the need for the public  to be educated on the dangers of poor sanitation so that an attitudinal change could be effected.

Mr Julius Debrah, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, for his part, urged the public to complement the efforts of Zoom Alliance to keep the environment clean.

He appealed to the public to continue the exercise after the one month period and ensure that they had clean environments to prevent the outbreak of diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea in their vicinities.

The team, after the launch, inspected some areas in Agblogbloshie that had been cleaned and advised residents to ensure that the drains remained clean after the exercise.
