Minority Leader wants EC chair to be cited for contempt of Parliament

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Haruna Iddrisu wants the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) to be cited for contempt of Parliament for her inability to appear before the House as scheduled on Thursday to brief members on preparation towards the organisation of Election 2020.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu had urged the Speaker of Parliament to cite the Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa for contempt of Parliament.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, Mr Iddrisu said the failure of the EC Chairperson to appear before the House to brief members on the Commission’s state of preparedness for the 2020 polls was disappointing.

“I should express my profound disappointment in the inability of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission or any of her deputies or any other member or management of our electoral process from not participating in this exercise that we are duly notified that she will be here. She must give reasons to Mr. Speaker why she should not be cited for contempt,” Mr Iddrisu said.

The Tamale South MP made these remarks during a special sitting with state institutions on matters relating to the 2020 elections.

Meeting with EC leadership rescheduled

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the appointment for the EC officials to brief Parliament has been re-scheduled.

He said the information to the EC to come before the House got the EC officials very late.
