Ministry of Health receives male condoms from USAID

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has taken delivery of 20 million ‘Protector Plus’ branded male condoms at a cost of US$ 600,000 from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The ‘Be-Safe’ branded condoms procured by the MoH, were recalled in April, 2013 as they were detected to be unsafe.

People complained that the condoms had holes in them, among other defects, and, therefore, it was unable to provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

The Minister of Health, Ms Sherry Ayitey, who took delivery of the condoms said the government was also working at procuring more consignments to forestal any shortage in future.

She said the ministry had set up a committee to investigate the cause of the importation of the unsafe condoms.

The ministry, she stated, would take appropriate steps to streamline the procurement system in the ministry and called on the USAID to assist them in doing so.

The USAID Mission Director, Ms Cherl Anderson, called on the MoH to implement its recently developed supply chain master plan designed to improve the management and quality of health sector commodities in the country.

She said the condoms were to ensure that the country maintained its progress made so far in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and its broader efforts to improve on public health.
