The over GH¢5 million, project which is a three-storey facility, will include banking halls, stores, stalls, washroom facilities and a nursery.

The project, expected to be completed within 18 months, is being funded by the municipal assembly.

Policies

Nii Laryea said one of the policies of the government was putting people first. That, he said,  had been demonstrated in all sectors of the economy.

He said the market would help boost economic growth in the area and also improve the living conditions of the people.

According to Nii Laryea, the popular demands for the construction of a  modern market befitting the status of the municipality and the timely response by the assembly clearly showed that the latter was responsive to the needs of the people.

The minister said the new facility would replace the dilapidated market structure that had existed in the area over the years.

He said the assembly had constructed temporary structures to accommodate the traders to pave the way for work on the project.

Nii Laryea also indicated that to ensure fairness in the allocation of stores and stalls, the existing occupants would be given priority.

He commended the assembly for the initiative.

For her part, the MCE of LaDMA, Ms Rita Odoley Sowah, said the assembly had undertaken many projects which had transformed the municipality.

She mentioned some of the projects as the construction of the Giffard Road,-Burma Camp roads renovation of selected classroom blocks and the asphaltic overlay of roads.

The chief executive also stated that following the fast growth in population, the municipality also needed a modern market to befit its status.

The MCE said the assembly intended to use the new market to create jobs by attracting more people to the city centre to engage in trading activities.

She said the project was in line with the Local Economic Development (LED) Policy of improving local economies.
