Minister calls for collaboration in health sector

Sherry Ayittey, Minister for healthThe Minister of Health, Ms Sherry Ayittey, has stated that effective communication and collaboration within the health sector is the key to unlock any form of misunderstanding among health workers.

She said the incessant strikes by health sector workers could be prevented through effective teamwork among the workers in the sector.

Addressing the fourth anniversary of the Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra yesterday, Ms Ayittey stressed that the health ministry was working towards improving productivity among health workers.

Furthermore, the ministry had taken steps to ensure equity in the distribution of human resource personnel and address other cross-cutting issues through human resource strategic policies, she added.

The President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Kwabena Opoku-Adusei, who also spoke at the function, suggested that the ministry should put in place a system to support the education of needy medical students in the country.

Medical education did not come cheap, he said, and called for the introduction of a system by which needy medical students could be assisted financially to complete their studies, after which they would be allowed ample time to pay back their debt to society.

Dr Opoku-Adusei highlighted the need for collaboration among health workers to facilitate activities in the sector.

He said the lack of respect and co-operation among workers in the sector was the cause of the internal struggles in the sector and called on individuals and health workers to respect the laws that governed the administration of the sector.

The General Secretary of the HSWU, Mr Abu  Kuntulo, said to ensure quality health care for all, there was the need to promote harmony and teamwork among health workers and professionals.
