Mining firm constructs boreholes for four communities

AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), which operates the Obuasi Mine, has installed mechanised boreholes in four communities within the Binsere electoral area in the Ashanti region. The initiative is aimed at providing safe drinking water to host communities and preventing waterborne diseases.

The project, which is estimated to cost GHS 2.5 million, is part of the company's 10-year socio-economic development plan to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene. The beneficiary communities are Ntonsua, Bidieso, Creeki and Kwabrafo.

The provision of potable water is expected to help resolve sanitation and hygiene issues that have been exacerbated by limited access to water. AGA's Senior Manager Sustainability, Mr Emmanuel Baidoo, expressed optimism that the project will provide clean water to communities and cut short the long commutes to obtain potable water.

The initiative forms part of AGA's contribution to mark this year's World Water Day, which advocates for sustainable management of freshwater resources, sanitation and hygiene. Mr Baidoo highlighted the importance of water and the company's commitment to managing it responsibly.

The construction of these community water systems is expected to contribute to the government's plan to provide a safe and sustainable supply of water to schools and households. Mr Daniel Osei, the Assemblyman of Binsere electoral area, expressed appreciation to AGA for the gesture and emphasised that the project would help households have access to safe water for consumption and other livelihood activities.

Nana Akwasi Kotei Mfram, a representative from the Dompoase traditional council, commended AGA for their timely assistance and assured the traditional authorities would ensure the facility is put to good use.
