The GH¢2 million project is expected to be completed in four months.

Show of gratitude

Members of the La community who made their way to the park were excited about the project and demonstrated a sense of gratitude to the McDan Group of Companies for committing resources towards the artificial park.

The promoters of the project envisage that the artificial park will not only promote games, but other community events.

The project will add to the other artificial parks under construction at Kyebi Zongo, Walewale Zongo and Madina by the Wembley Sports Construction Company Limited for the Government of Ghana.

McDan Group of Companies has also cut the sod for the construction of an astroturf for the Okponglo community.

More football talents

At the sod-cutting ceremony at La, the Group Chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, Mr Daniel Mckorley, expressed optimism that the astroturf would facilitate the development of more football talents for the country.

"For me it is not about how much profit your company is making, it's the number of lives you have impacted that matters and that's what the McDan brand stands for. I expect more youth to be enthusiastic about this project and harness their football talents," he stated.

Social responsibility

Mr Mckorley said he was pleased to give back to the society that had impacted a lot in his life.

He explained that being a son of the soil, it was always his pleasure to ensure that the youth at La Dadekotopon got a multi-purpose sports facility to nurture their talents.

Sod-cutting

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr lsaac Asiamah, who cut the sod for work to begin, lauded the McDan Group for the initiative.

He further indicated that the project was in line with the President's vision to have decent and modern multipurpose sports facilities across the country for sports and talent development.

"I'm calling on all MCEs to secure lands for sports development...our maintenance culture as a country is very bad.

“Look at the Accra Sports Stadium; it has not been renovated for the past nine years and it is very bad. We're developing a maintenance manual for all sports facilities in the country to ensure that they are in good shape at all times,” he hinted.

Legacy

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La Dadekotopon, Madam Gladys Mann-Dedey, also used the occasion to advise the community members to be mindful of their activities on the park when the project was completed.

"This turf is in honour of La's proud heritage as the cradle of legendary footballers, boxers and athletes for the country. Therefore, maintain this artificial park for your own benefit and the generations yet to come," she admonished.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for La Dadekotopon, Mr Vincent Odotei Sowah, said the project was historic and had high hopes that Black Stars players in the likes of Nii Laryea, Godwin Attram and Ben Kai would emerge from the La community again.

"This is a full-size artificial pitch. We don't have many of such pitches in the country. If we maintain it well, other football clubs could pay for its use and it will generate revenue for us," he said.

"I'm very proud of the McDan Group of Companies for their love and support to this community. God bless them," Nii Lantey, a highly elated resident of La, shared his joy.
