Mayor Sackey to join President Akufo-Addo launch Accra World Book Capital 2023 today

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, alongside President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, will host the grand opening of the Accra World Book Capital (AWBC) at the Accra International Conference.

The event is themed "Reading to connect minds for social transformation" and is expected to be attended by dignitaries such as the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Greater London Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, members of the Diplomatic Community in Ghana, UNESCO Representatives in the Africa Region and its Paris headquarters, Directors and Representatives of the United Nations Agencies, among others. 

The City of Accra was declared as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2023 on 22nd September 2021 to promote the literary achievements and cultural heritage of Accra and provide reading, creative-writing, and employable skills to vulnerable and marginalized groups such as children, youth, head porters (kayayei), and persons with disabilities. 

The year-long program aims to promote positive social change in Accra and the rest of Ghana using books and reading, including activities such as introducing mobile libraries, organizing workshops to promote reading and writing in different Ghanaian languages, establishing skills and training centers for unemployed youth, and organizing competitions to showcase Ghanaian arts and culture while promoting inclusivity.
