Masked men kill Bawku student

Three masked men on Thursday night shot and killed a student at Tempane near Garu in the Upper East Region.

Identified as Emmanuel Awuni, 20, the deceased was a student of the Bawku Technical Institute.

He was riding a motorbike at the time the incident occurred and was on his way home to a village called Gbane-Corner following the closure of the Bawku Technical Institute after students’ protests.

Riding with him on the bike was Cynthia Abugri, 23, his brother’s wife.

The Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Agbanyo confirmed the incident to Graphiconline’s Upper East Correspondent Vincent Amenuveve.

He explained the incident occurred around 8:30pm Thursday but said no arrests have been made as of now.

He said police investigations have established that the masked men were wielding AK 47 Assault rifles and that three AK 47 ammunition empty shells were found at the crime scene Friday morning.

According to the PRO, the body of the deceased has been released to the family for burial following an autopsy conducted by Dr Koray Ubeiba of the Quality Medical Center at Garu.

ASP Agbanyo further stated that Ms Abugri (the pillion) was responding to treatment at the same medical center.

Police are investigating the incident.
