Martin Amidu ‘goofed big time’ with Anas accusation – Kweku Baako

The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide, Mr Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has denied a claim by former Attorney-General, Mr Martin Amidu, to the effect that the judicial corruption investigation undertaken by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas was commissioned by the government.

Mr Amidu, in an article published on Monday, alleged that it was the late President John Atta Mills who commissioned the judicial corruption investigation which exposed monumental bribery and corruption in the judiciary, involving over 180 workers, including 34 judges.

“I have said that the undercover investigation that led to the judicial corruption expose was commissioned by the Government of Ghana and has its genesis in the acrimonious relationship between the Government and the Judiciary on the assumption of power in 2009 by the Government and the constant demand by the Judiciary for proof of judicial corruption from Government and its associates.

“I was Presidential Advisor on Legal Affairs in the second half of 2009, I was Minister for the Interior in 2010, and the Attorney General in 2011 before I left office in 2012. I therefore know what I am talking about, Mr Amidu wrote.

But the claim has been strenuously denied by Mr Baako, who is Anas’ boss and mentor.

"Government did not, repeat, not commission the Anas Project on Judicial Corruption. Neither did Anas/Tiger Eye collaborate with any State Security or Law Enforcement Agency in pursuit of this particular project.,” Mr Baako wrote on Facebook Monday.

He said anytime government or State agencies had had anything to do with projects undertaken by Anas, the journalist had publicly acknowledged it through public interviews and in the audio visual documentaries which he publicizes.

Mr Baako said: “There was open acknowledgement that President Mills' Administration had commissioned the Tema Port project. Court records too show that Tiger Eye indicated that COCOBOD had commissioned the anti-cocoa smuggling project.

“There are examples of such acknowledgments pre-dating the Mills and Mahama Administrations. Many of Anas' projects, both in Ghana and outside Ghana, have had no connection with GoG or any State Agency.

Mr Baako added that although Mr Amidu was” a great patriot passionate about the fight against corruption and bad governance”, he had “goofed big time” with his latest accusation.
