Man, 63, in police grip for swindling forex bureau

A 63-year-old man who allegedly swindled a forex bureau operator and attempted to defraud the company for the second time in three months has been arrested by the Airport Police.

The suspect, identified as Nkot Nkot, a Camerounian, is said to have visited the forex bureau with an accomplice who is yet to be identified and is currently on the run.

Transaction

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, said Nkot was arrested when he returned to the forex bureau and attempted to swindle the attendant.

She said at about 3p.m. on February 22, 2020, Nkot and his accomplice visited the forex bureau (name withheld) to change some dollars into cedis.

Nkot, she said, gave the attendant $6,000 and received its cedi equivalent, but he told the attendant he had rescinded his decision to change the money.

The forex bureau attendant, therefore, gave Nkot the $6,000 and took back the cedi equivalent.

But after exchanging the currencies, Nkot changed his mind again and said he would go ahead to change the dollars into cedis.

Unknown to the attendant, however, Nkot had removed some of the dollar notes from the bunch before handing the rest over.

DSP Tenge said the forex bureau attendant went ahead to give the cedi equivalent of $6,000 to Nkot.

She said it was only after the day's work that the forex bureau attendant and his colleagues found that they had recorded a shortage of $1,700 from the day's transactions.

CCTV

Mrs Tenge said when the forex bureau operator played the CCTV footage for the day, he saw Nkot and his accomplice removing some of the dollar notes before handing over the money to the attendant.

On May 1, 2020, Nkot and his accomplice went to the same forex bureau to change $6,000 using the same modus operandi.

The forex bureau attendant identified Nkot and his accomplice and raised an alarm, but the accomplice managed to escape.

Nkot was apprehended by the workers of the forex bureau and handed over to the Airport Police.
