Logs and Lumber supports Sefwi Wiawso Hospital

A timber processing company, Logs and Lumber Limited (LLL), has given a lifeline to the Sefwi Wiawso Hospital by providing an anaesthetic machine worth $30,000 to facilitate surgery and other life-support treatments.

The machine is the first in 23 years after the old machine at the hospital became dysfunctional.

The gesture from the Kumasi-based company followed a proposal sent by officials of the hospital to the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, under the paramountcy of Katakyie Kwesi Bum Ankamah, upon which a request was sent to the company for assistance.

The General Production Manager of LLL, Hamza Rammal, who led a team from the company to present the items, said it formed part of their corporate social responsibility.

Currently, Sefwi Wiawso is one of six forest districts where the company has its forest concessions for the production of raw timber logs before value is added to them for export to the European market, the Middle East and Asia.

Projects

The presentation of the anaesthetic machine comes after the company had presented GH¢20,000 to a community clinic.

The LLL, under the leadership of the General Manager, Avedis Jeghalin, has also constructed a three-unit classroom block at Goaso, built a community centre and provided two mechanised boreholes for the people of Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Other projects include a 10-seater toilet facility for the people of Juaso and some basic facilities for forest-fringe communities where the company by law pays five per cent of earnings from the concessions to develop such communities.

Minister

Recently, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Nii Osah Mills, and the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, William Hanna, gave LLL the thumbs up for leading the way in exporting only legal timber products to the European markets.

Ghana has signed the Voluntary Partnership Agreement with the European Union to ensure that only legal timber with some required specifications were exported to the European market.

The minister commended the management of the company for ‘utilising timber to the fullest’ where even the waste products are turned into various products for exports.

Medical doctor

The Medical Superintendent in charge of the Sefwi Hospital, Dr Edward Osei Appiah, commended LLL for the assistance and said it would help to improve services at the hospital.
