“The allowable load limit on these bridges is now 20 tonnes,” a statement issued by the GHA in Accra said.

Vehicles weighing above 20 tonnes

It said vehicles weighing above 20 tonnes would, therefore, not be allowed to cross the two bridges.

In view of the load limits, it said mobile axle load weighing vans would be placed at the ends of the two bridges to enforce compliance.

The statement outlined alternative routes for vehicles weighing above 20 tonnes.

For the Western corridor, it suggested the movement to follow from Accra through Kumasi, Wenchi, Bamboi and Bole to Wa.

In the case of the Eastern corridor, it has to be from Accra trough Tema, Hohoe, Jasikan, Nkwanta, Oti Damanko and Bimbila to Yendi.

The Central corridor starts from Accra through Kumasi, Mampong, Ejura, Atebubu and Yendi (by Ferry crossing) to Salaga or Kintampo through Techiman, Nkoranza, Ejura,
Atebubu and Yendi (ferry crossing) to Salaga.

The Western/Central corridor is from Takoradi through Tarkwa, Bogosu, Ayamfuri, Dunkwa, Obuasi, Kumasi, Techiman, Wenchi, Bamboi and Bamboi to Wa.

Rehabilitation works

The statement said rehabilitation works on the two bridges would start soon, but did not say exactly when, adding that once the project commenced, the two bridges would be closed to traffic.

“Motorists are advised to adhere to the allowance limit in order to maintain safety on the bridges ahead of the planned rehabilitation works,” the statement advised.
