Let’s criticise NHIS constructively

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mr Daniel Acheampong-Frimpong, has urged stakeholders in the industry to be candid and constructive in their suggestions to help in building a sustainable health insurance scheme.

He explained that the scheme was operating an open-door policy that accommodated propositions from stakeholders, especially from service providers, clients and other organisations.

Mr Acheampong-Frimpong, who made the call during a brainstorming session organised by the Ashanti Regional office of the NHIS, for stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting the scheme, asked them to be frank and come out with feasible suggestions that would help grow the insurance scheme.

Arrears

He noted that gradually, the scheme was clearing all the areas it owed the various service providers and gave the assurance that very soon all issues on arrears would be a thing of the past.

Biometric cards

On biometric cards, Mr Acheampong-Frimpong said the scheme had also advanced greatly in the distribution of biometric cards as part of the process to digitise the insurance scheme to help enhance its work as well as facilitate the process.

He explained that the biometric cards were issued instantly and it contained basic biographic information as well as biometric data of the subscriber.

He explained that the new card was valid for five years and was subject to yearly membership renewals.

He added that the security of the card was more of electronic than physical due to the biometric nature of the data which was embedded in the memory of the card.

Capitation

He announced that the piloting of the capitation of the NHIS in the Ashanti Region had yielded very fruitful results for both primary healthcare providers and, especially clients who had seen improved service delivery.
He also noted that the regions to benefit from the capitation were Volta, Upper East and Upper West.
