Evans Mensah, 26, and Francis Arthur, 29, allegedly made away with many packets of scratch cards valued at thousands of cedis and GH¢5,000 when they raided the shop on August 16.

The shouts for help from a sales girl, whose bag the robbers also stole, made some bystanders to accost Arthur, while Mensah managed to escape.

Mensah was, however, arrested in Accra last Thursday and handed over to the Kwesimintsim Police in the Western Region.

Briefing the Daily Graphic yesterday, Superintendent of Police, Mr Ahmed Issah Yakubu, said when Arthur was arrested, he claimed that Mensah, a resident of Dansoman in Accra, had visited him (Arthur) but had no money to pay for his return journey to Accra.

He said Arthur alleged that Mensah called someone in Accra for assistance and that person, whose identity Arthur did not know, sent money through MTN Mobile Money to Mensah.

Mr Yakubu said Arthur claimed that Mensah returned to Kwesimintsim with a pistol on Thursday, August 15, 2013 and told Arthur that “there was money to be made”.

The two, according to Mr Yakubu, went to the shop that day to survey the area and planned to attack the next day, August 16.

He said on the day of the robbery, the suspects went to the shop early in the morning at a time it had not opened for business.

According to him, as soon as the sales girl opened the shop to begin the day’s business, the suspects entered the shop and demanded all money available.

He said the suspects subsequently blindfolded the girl and stole the scratch cards and her bag.

Mr Yakubu said immediately the suspects had left the shop, the girl started shouting for help, leading to Arthur’s arrest.

Upon his arrest, he said, Arthur allegedly admitted to robbing the shop, together with Mensah.
