Konadu Memorial Games: Newspapers Department tops all

The Newspapers Department of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) last Saturday put up a spirited performance which saw it being crowned as the overall champions at the third annual Samuel Konadu inter-departmental games of the company which was held at the El Wak Sports Stadium.

A better and tactically disposed Newspapers Department which was tied at the same point with Administration, at the peak of the competition, used a win in the Azonto dance contest to annex the trophy.

The mesmerising twists and turns by Ms Adwoa Amofa Osei of the Newspapers Department, who represented the department in the Azonto dance competition, drew shouts and applause from even ‘opposition’ elements.

The Newspaper Department thus won six trophies in all as against five by Administration.

Secret camping helped

Observers of the games were unanimous in their views that a secret camping that the Newspapers Department had embarked on a week before the games, had proven useful in keeping them in perfect shape for the competition.

The reigning champions, Graphic Packaging (G-Pak) could only manage with three trophies.

The annual inter-departmental games are held in memory of the late Samuel Konadu, a driver of the company, who died through a road accident while in the line of duty three years ago.

He died on a day when the company had met for its inter-departmental games but it had to be cancelled following news of his untimely death.

Last Saturday’s games attracted the largest patronage so far and therefore, culminated in a fiercely contested competition.

Newspapers started very well by dominating and winning the tug of peace (men and women), the egg and spoon race, ludo and playing cards.

Robust ladies

The editor of The Mirror, Mrs Janet Quainoo, led a robust group of Newspapers ladies in overpowering all opponents from other departments.

Clearly, the strength and fortitude of the Newspapers team in both the men and women tug of peace, placed them at a height that made all the other competitors appear like “dwarfs” contending with giants.

Administration came second when it won the table tennis, draught, scrabble and the 4x100 metres relay thus taking home five trophies while Marketing, Technical and G-Pak followed on the table with three trophies respectively.

The day started with a health walk, followed by a health talk by Dr Kojo Essel, a medical expert.

After the games, the Managing Director expressed joy at the turnout and the healthy rivalry that characterised the entire competition.

He said it was important that staff of the company used the occasion to get to know each other since a good number of people worked in different departments who hardly came into contact with others from different departments.

The Director of Newspapers, Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, said the day had been very eventful and exciting and expressed the hope that those who could not make it this year, would find time to do so next year.

The editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Ransford Tetteh reached on phone for his comments said that the secret camping he had taken the Newspapers team to, had proven very helpful and dropped hints that for next year, the team may consider flying out of the country for its camping.
