At the inauguration ceremony in Accra, the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, said the reason for allowing a third party to refurbish and run the bookshop was that the university, since the establishment of the bookshop, had faced many challenges in managing it.

“Even though we knew exactly what the bookshop was supposed to do for us, we had come to a point where as a result of various challenges, either financial or managerial, we were struggling to make the bookshop do for us what was intended,” he said.

For that reason, he said, the management of the university then decided to bring in a third party that was committed to the values of the university, to resource and operate the bookshop.

Prof. Aryeetey, therefore, expressed the hope that the newly refurbished bookshop would meet the everyday needs of students and also compete with all other sources of materials for students.

“Our faculties have very diverse needs and expectations and are looking for books and current material on their disciplines. This bookshop should be able to make that available,” he said.

Regain lost glory

Aside from meeting the needs of the students, Prof. Aryeetey said the bookshop had over the years been the first port of call for the reading public who were looking for books on their disciplines.

He expressed optimism that the investment made by Kingdom Books and Stationery Limited would restore the past glory of the bookshop so that the general public would find the facility useful again.

Scholarship and credit facility

In her address, the Branch Manager of the University Bookshop, Mrs Eugenia Odame Yeboah, thanked the management of the university for having confidence in Kingdom Books and Stationery to give the bookshop a modern outlook.

Mrs Yeboah said to facilitate such an effort, the management of Kingdom Books and Stationery had extended its 30-day credit facility to the various colleges and departments of the university and businesses located in and around the university.

In addition, it would also offer scholarships to 100 needy, brilliant students annually and be actively involved in the various university programmes by way of sponsorship.

“We also intend to institutionalise a book buying back scheme, where students can sell books that they do not intend to use again after completion of their courses. This will make it possible for other students to get these fairly used but good books at half price,” she added.
