Intensify efforts to achieve Ghana Revenue Authority goals - Kwesie

The Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr E. Ernest Kwesie, has urged employees of the authority to intensify efforts to achieve the goals of the GRA since there has been negative deviation by both the Customs Division and the Domestic Tax Revenue in the first half of 2013.

He said the country was relying on GRA’s ability to enhance revenue mobilisation by spreading the tax net and sealing the revenue leakage as well as the elimination of malpractices especially at the ports and harbours as well as the entry points.

“We know you are capable of restoring confidence in your operations as you did after the abysmal performance of the years 1997 and 1998”, he said.

Mr Kwesie said this at a mini delegates conference of the senior and junior staff associations held in Kumasi.  The conference was held on the theme: “The Future of Staff Associations in the GRA”.

In order to achieve the revenue target for 2013, the board chairman encouraged the representatives of the staff to co-operate with other colleagues as they had done in the previous years and not to lose their focus.

He said the utmost concern of the board was the welfare of the staff and, “therefore, the board will continue to operate an open policy and, would be ready to listen to and take workers’ concerns on board as inputs in the formulation of policies”.

Mr Kwesie appealed to staff to always exhaust all avenues open to staff internally to resolve their problems before resorting to outside interventions.

The National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the Custom Division, Mr Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah, said the conference was  to create a platform  for delegates to hold vital discussions on issues before the annual delegates conferences which comes off at the end of the year.

He  said for the past five years, the GRA had not been able to recruit staff and this had led to the decline in productivity and stress on the few workers left.

The staff , he added, had also over the years appealed to management to provide them with resources but all to no avail.
