Insurance Commission, police team up to weed out fake insurance

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) as part of measures to address fake insurance certificates is set to rollout a central database system to capture all policies issued by insurance companies to ensure easy verification.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission, Mr Justice Ofori at the climax of a one week training workshop for 105 Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) Police personnel in Koforidua.

‘’We are going to have a system whereby it will be easy for the police to simply send a vehicle’s license number to a short code and all the confirmation with respect to insurance availability would be known without any complexity’’, he emphasized.

He added that the system was also going to afford customers the opportunity to confirm the authenticity of the insurance policy they purchase.

Training
The training offered by NIC formed part of efforts to engender a stronger partnership with the Police to appreciate the importance of insurance and to keep the roads safe.

The one week training saw participants trained in Police ethics, intelligence gathering, integrity, professionalism, techniques in road traffic management, handling of equipment used to control or enforce road traffic laws, stress management and handling of psychological issues, among others.

Mr Ofori called on Insurance companies to build a lot of confidence on the market by making sure they paid their claims on time to instill some confidence in the people.

Superintendent Adu Boahen from the MTTD Headquarters said the one week training was geared towards the achievement of the Inspector General of Police’s vision of making Ghana Police a force to reckon with and one of the best on the continent and in the world.
