Improve Eastern Region roads - President urged

Residents of Asamankese in the West Akim municipality of the Eastern Region and its environs last Thursday staged a demonstration to protest the deplorable roads in the region.

The demonstration, organised by the Mass Action For Development (MAFOD), a non-governmental organisation, attracted scores of people, who later presented a petition to President John Dramani Mahama through the West Akim Municipal Assembly.

In the petition read by the convener of MAFOD, Mr Kingsley Ofosu Ntiamoah, the protestors said the poor nature of roads in the region causes huge economic losses to the people; results in frequent breakdown of vehicles and loss of lives.

Grievances

Mr Ntiamoah said transport owners and drivers plying the roads spent substantial parts of their incomes on spare parts, while a number of pregnant women had either lost their lives or their unborn babies due to the poor nature of the roads

"We do not demand anything extraordinary from the government but an improvement of the road network in the Eastern Region.

“Again, MAFOD is reminding the government of the many promises that you (Your Excellency) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) trumpeted during the 2012 general election. We are just saying do what you said you will do when given the mandate to rule," he added.

Neglect

Mr Ntiamoah said the Eastern Region, in particular, had not been given the needed attention by the government and called on the authorities to review their position.

He served notice that MAFOD would continue to rock the region with a series of demonstrations for the government to act rightly.

The acting Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Eric Adomako, who received the petition, said the concerns of the demonstrators would be conveyed to the appropriate quarters for redress.
