The MDAs include the Attorney General’s Department and Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Ghana Police Service.

The others are the Births and Deaths Registry, the Passport Office, the Registrar General’s Department, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Financial Intelligence Office.

Increasing migratory movements

The acting Deputy Director of Immigration in charge of Legal, Ms Victoria Ninette Baaba Asare, said governments all over the world were now faced with increasing migratory movements and their accompanying management challenges, as migratory behaviour had become more and more ubiquitous and complex.

She said migration had indeed been identified as an important medium for social, economic and cultural change, and its relationship with history was dynamic.

The trend, Ms Baaba Asare said, had created the circumstances for varied and complex forms of migration; a situation which underscored the need for a collective approach to migration management that would take into account the relationship between migration and other contemporary issues.

Move to manage migration

According to her, the GIS, in identifying the challenges and some potential benefits inherent in the phenomenon of moving population, submitted a proposal to the European Union for assistance to manage migration effectively.

The proposal, according to her, was accepted and a programme was developed with the objectives to counter human smuggling and other forms of irregular migration in Ghana.

“Since the inception of the programme, some notable and significant achievements in the area of inter-agency collaborations in the fight against the twin canker of migration and human trafficking have been achieved,” she said.
