IGP warns law breakers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has given the strongest indication of the resolve of the Police Administration to deal ruthlessly with criminals in the society.
He said the Police Administration would no longer keep mute over the senseless killings of its officers in the line of duty and the baseless attacks on police stations and posts across the country.

Reviewing a passing out parade for 618 police recruits at the National Police Training School in Accra yesterday, the IGP said the Police Administration had collectively resolved to reverse the trend of action, saying the officers and men of the service would not be cowed to allow lawlessness to take over the country.

Senseless attacks
To that end, he charged all regional commanders to deal ruthlessly with anyone who would henceforth dare to wage senseless attacks on any police officer or installation.
The IGP said decent minded citizens of the country desired to live in peace as they struggled each day to make ends meet, adding: “These decent and law abiding persons are in the majority and we have their support.”

Mr Asante-Apeatu lamented that the Ghana Police Service had come under attack from miscreants and had lost a number of personnel in the line of duty at the hands of suspected criminals, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.

Gallant officers

According to the IGP, the victims were some of the finest and gallant officers of the service who had been lost due to "acts that can best be described as criminal and perpetuated by cowards."
He also used the occasion to commend officers and men of the service for their hardwork and dedication and for restraining themselves from reprisal attacks characteristic of uniformed officers whenever they were recklessly attacked and their authority challenged.

He said the recruits had been taken through intense and cutting edge contemporary policing disciplines and a curriculum carefully designed to shape and equip them with the knowledge and capabilities to become excellent police officers to meet the essentials of modern law enforcement
.
Strategic priorities

He said the new recruits were the pioneers to be trained in the “Child Friendly Policing Initiative”, which the police had adopted as one of its strategic priorities.
The IGP advised the recruits to realise that the police profession was not easy for a number of reasons and, therefore, they should be mentally prepared for the tasks ahead as they would be confronted with a number of challenges.

"This job will demand your full life with very little space for leisure. Your full commitment is expected at all times," he told the recruits.
General Recruit Vincent Kofi MacCarthy emerged the overall best recruit.
