Ho to get dual carriageways

Two major roads in the Ho Municipality are to be upgraded to dual carriageways as part of moves by the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) to add to the beautification process in the Volta Regional capital.

The first dual carriageway will be constructed over 10.5 kilometres at a cost of GH¢98 million. It will start from Sokode-Gbogame, an entry point of Ho, to the Civic Centre, while the other road, worth GH¢28 million, will also begin from Sokode-Etoe through the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) to Titrinu, a distance of 10.5 kilometres.

The project is coming on the heels of the near completion of asphalt overlay on some roads in the town.

The project has since been commenced by the contractors, China Railways and First Sky Construction companies, with the construction of drains.

The two projects started last month and are expected to be completed within 18 months.

Design

At a stakeholders’ meeting, the design consultant for the Sokode-Gbogame-Civic Centre project, Mr Charles Wood, gave details of how the road would look like on completion, explaining that it would include traffic lights, bus stops, roundabouts, a median, walkways, street lights and an interchange at the UHAS Junction.

The Deputy Director of Urban Roads, Mr Kwasi Nuamah, appealed to the people to cooperate with the contractors to complete the work on schedule.

Compensation

On the issue of compensation, he indicated that persons whose permanent structures would be affected by the project would be compensated after they have provided the necessary documentation.

He said those who had encroached on government lands would have to move to pave the way for work to progress smoothly.

Appreciation

The Volta Regional Minister, Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, expressed appreciation for the projects and asked the contractors to execute quality work and also finish on time, “so that when we are talking about good roads in the region, we can boast of these ones as well”.

For her part, the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs Fafa Adinyira, said, “We have been crying for a dual carriageway for a long time. Now we have it and so let us all help in the successful execution of the projects.”
