Hamile explosion: Immigration officer dead, another hospitalised

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed the death of one of its officers who lost his life in the line of duty after a load on an intercepted tricycle exploded during a border patrol operation in the Hamile Sector.

According to a press release signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Barbara Sam, the unfortunate incident occurred along an unapproved route in the Hamile Sector in the early hours of Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

A team of four officers deployed for border patrol duties had responded to an unusual sound in the area. During the response, the team intercepted a man conveying a load on a tricycle who attempted to escape.

As the officers approached to ascertain the contents of the load, the rider attempted to evade arrest.

In the process of trying to stop him, the load exploded, resulting in the death of the tricycle rider and injuries to two officers. Regrettably, one of the injured officers later succumbed to his injuries.

The other officer is currently receiving emergency medical care at Nandom Hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition and responding to treatment.

The Sector Commander and a team visited the scene, which has since been secured. Investigations have commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Service assured the general public that border security operations in the Hamile Sector remain fully operational, and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of the area.

The Ghana Immigration Service extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased officer.

It also appealed to the media and the general public to respect the privacy of the affected families and to refrain from circulating unverified information, images or videos relating to the incident. Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.
