The day will be commemorated globally today by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the theme: “End Malaria for Good”.

According to the World Malaria Report 2016, in 2015, there were 212 million new cases of malaria and 429,000 deaths. One child dies from malaria every two minutes. Nearly half of the world's population is at risk of malaria.

Malaria remains both a major cause and a consequence of global poverty and inequity: its burden is greatest in the least developed areas and among the poorest members of society. Many of those most vulnerable – especially young children and pregnant women – are still not able to access the life-saving prevention, diagnosis and treatment they so urgently need.

However, global partners and the key stakeholders believe, “We can be the generation that ends malaria – one of the oldest and deadliest diseases in human history.”

Guilin Pharma

Against this backdrop, Guilin Pharma has over the years supported a number of good causes as part of its corporate social responsibility and contribution to the global effort to control malaria.

The company is recognised globally as an integrated industry chain for Artemisinin-based medicines. The company markets its products in developing countries and supplies products to clients all over the world. Its clientele includes WHO, United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF), ????ICRC, MSF????, as well as other governmental, profit and non-profit organisations.

Guilin Pharma has been operating in the Ghanaian market over the past seven years, producing a variety of medicines but focusing on anti-malaria medicines production, and other generic medicines.

In 2015, the company made a similar donation to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The items (anti-malaria drugs,G-Abzole, LED Display Screen, Wound Plasters, Thermometers and Stethoscopes) were presented by the Managing Director, Mr Wang Yafeng, and the Sales and Marketing Manager of Guilin Pharmaceuticals, Mr Cyrus Baidoo.

Hospital grateful

Receiving the donation, the acting Head of the Pharmacy Unit of the hospital, Mrs Sheila Gyasi Nimako, thanked Guilin for the gesture and noted that such support would help in the fight to control and ultimately end malaria.

She noted that the hospital was challenged and, therefore, needed more of such support, saying her “outfit will do well with more of such support from other companies”.

Pantang is one of three psychiatric hospitals in Ghana. It is the largest and was inaugurated in 1975. The others are in Accra and Ankaful in the Central Region.
