Wisconsin University opens in Accra

A new university, Wisconsin International University, Ghana (WIU), located at Kwanbenya in the Ga district, has been commissioned at a ceremony.The University, which will commence in September this year, will begin with an MBA programme and later add undergraduate programmes in business adult education and distance learning.

The University is an affiliate of Wisconsin International University, a non-profit university organised under the laws of the State of Wisconsin in the USA, with its central office in the city of Milwankee.

Already, the University has branches in Europe, Asia and South America.

Dr John Buuck, President, Board of Governors of Wisconsin International University in an address said the purpose of the WIU-Ghana is to establish universities in other parts of the continent.

He expressed appreciation to the government of Ghana and especially the Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Education for giving Wisconsin International University interim accreditation to begin the MBA programme.

He said the world today is interconnected through economy and communication and that no country can be isolated from the rest of the world.

“When the economy is affected in one country, other countries of the world are affected as well,” he stated.

In this regard, he said students in many professions need knowledge of marketing, management, economics and finance to understand business in the world.

Rt Rev Dr Paul Fynn, Chairman, Board of Governors of WIU-Ghana, said since education is an investment, Ghanaians should show more commitment to the development of education in the country.

He said even though Ghana has one or two good universities, we still need more universities to cater for the many good drop outs to become useful citizens of the country.

He said it is the goal of WIU-Ghana to equip students to become practical in outlook as well as problem solvers.
