Graphic, Presby church organise blood donation exercise

The Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) and the Young Adult Fellowship (YAF) of the Kaneshie District Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana undertook a blood donation exercise in Accra last Saturday in response to an appeal by the National Blood Bank (NBB) to help it restock.

The  exercise, which generated about 100 pints of blood took place at the Oduman Health Centre in Accra.

Mr Samuel Nkrumah Asamoah of the YAF said Christians had the primary duty to save lives, hence their involvement in such an exercise.

“We want to help our communities and the nation so we will continue to offer such support,” he said.

Fees at blood bank

For his part, the Deputy Chief Blood Donor Organiser at the blood bank, Mr Gambo Idris Wangabi, denied rumours that the bank sold blood that it had in stock.

He said the blood bank only charged a processing fee for tests to be conducted before one was considered eligible to donate blood.

“The processing fee of GH¢85 is for tests to determine one’s HIV and hepatitis status.

“The cost could even be higher if the person in need of blood is not a donor,” he said.

In addition to the processing fee, he explained that non-donor of blood would be required to purchase blood for his or her health needs.

He indicated that anyone who had donated blood on more than three occasions would not need to pay for blood.

Mr Wangabi urged the public,  to therefore, see blood donation as a call to save life and money.

Blood donation

The Senior Corporate Communications Officer of the GCGL, Ms Kyerewaa Boateng, said the event formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility of assisting the needy in society.

She said: “the company undertakes three of such blood donation exercises each year as its contribution to helping the blood bank stock up blood.”
