The Minister of State in charge of tertiary education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, who made this known to the Daily Graphic, said the council for the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) would be inaugurated today.

He was reacting to a two-week ultimatum given to the government by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to re-form councils of public universities.

UTAG worried

UTAG explained that the absence of councils was creating some challenges for the various universities.

It said the universities were ready to graduate their students but were in a fix as to what to do.

It said the association had communicated their concerns to the Ministry of Education but there had been no response as to what was being done to remedy the situation.

The association described it as “unacceptable that for six months now, none of our public universities has a council”.

Most public universities are set to reopen in August, with lectures to begin later that month or in early September.

 No cause for alarm

Prof. Yankah said all was set for the councils to be inaugurated and that the inauguration of the council of the UHAS would mark the beginning of the inauguration of all other public universities.

“I know for sure that tomorrow at 2p.m., we are inaugurating the council for the University of Health and Allied Sciences and as soon as that one is done, all the other universities will follow,” he said.
