Government will address challenges in free SHS programme - Samira Bawumia

The Second Lady, Mrs Samira Bawumia, has assured Ghanaians that the government was working towards addressing the teething challenges in the implementation of the free SHS policy. She said the government is making every effort “to make this life-changing programme sustainable.”

Event

Mrs Bawumia was speaking at the 68th Speech and Prize-giving Day of the T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in Kumasi last weekend.
The programme was on the theme: “Ensuring Quality Free Senior High School Education to the Ghanaian Child: The Role of Stakeholders.”

Dormitory

The Headmaster of the school, Alhaji Yakub Abubakar, said  since the inception of the school 68 years ago, "there has been no provision of a girls' dormitory by the central government and for that matter the Ghana Education Service (GES).”

The headmaster described the three-storey girls dormitory block that was funded by the school’s PTA as appalling.  It is currently housing 968 students.

He, however, said in spite of the challenges,  the school was able to record 100 per cent pass in last year's WASSCE results.

In the area of sports, Alhaji Abubakar said the school was occupying an enviable position of being a nine-time Super Zonal Champions (boys and girls) in the School and Colleges Athletics competition in the Ashanti Region, which comprised more than 120 participating schools.

Religious tolerance

The Ameer and Missionary in Charge, Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana, Maulvi Alhaj Mohammed Bin Salih, give an assurance that the school would continue to be tolerant of all religions, so nobody would be compelled to join or practise a religious act that did not conform to one's faith.

He said the school, through the leadership of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, would continue to instil discipline in the students and prepare them adequately to become responsible adults in future.
