Already, a 780-kilometre fibre optic ICT backbone infrastructure is being constructed in the eastern corridor to provide broadband services to towns and communities along the route from Ho to Bawku, with links to Tamale from Yendi.

When completed, the new infrastructure will be connected to the existing national fibre backbone to promote further development of the sector.

Taking her turn at the meet-the-press series in Accra yesterday, Ms Hammah said the completion of the fibre backbone infrastructure would result in the reduction of bandwidth cost and bridge the gap between urban and rural communities.

Ms Hammah also announced that the ministry had established a computer emergency response team (CERT) to implement initiatives to secure and protect the country’s Internet networks from cyber attacks

Regional Development Forum

The media encounter served as a platform for the Ministry of Communications to announce Ghana’s selection as the venue for the Regional Development Forum (RDF) for Africa and International Telecommunications Union (ITU) conferences next month.

The Africa Regional Development Forum (RDF) is scheduled for October 1, 2013, while the Africa Regional Preparatory Meeting for the ITU World Telecommunications Development Conference (WTDC-14) will be held from October 2 to 4, 2013.

The Africa Regional Development Forum, to be held on the eve of the ITU Regional Preparatory Meeting, will consider key trends in the development of telecommunications and ICT in the region.
