Mr Anas received a 4x4 vehicle, and Mr Darko, a saloon car at a ceremony at the Press Centre in Accra last Thursday.

The association’s annual awards ceremony, which seeks to reward outstanding journalists for their contributions to national development, took place at the Banquet Hall in Accra in August, 2016.

In all, 26 journalists received honours in various categories at the 20th GJA awards ceremony. According to the GJA, however, the presentation of the awards was delayed for reasons beyond their control.

Significance

The President of the GJA, Mr Affail Monney, said the awards occupied a special place in the media landscape in the country and now that the association was receiving sponsor ship packages, it would make the awards more competitive.

Mr Monney explained that the awards scheme was aimed at ensuring excellence in journalistic practice in the country. “Our job is like feeding the shark, you don’t stop, because when you stop it will eat you up,” he said.

According to him, the job of a journalist was a tedious one for which reason deserving journalists must be appreciated. “Journalists must continue to focus on issues that make impact on society to achieve results,” the president added.

He further indicated, “Excellence is a choice: individuals can choose to be good journalists or mediocre journalists”.

Reaction

Latif Abubakar, who represented Anas, expressed appreciation to the organisers and sponsors for the honour bestowed on Anas and his team.

He explained that as investigative journalists, their objective was not only about winning awards for their output but were also motivated by getting the needed results.
