Give BECE candidates more time to prepare — GNAT

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to give Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) candidates ample time to overcome the psychological trauma occasioned by the cancellation of five papers before the rescheduled examination for June 29 and 30.

The GNAT said it was proposing enough time for the preparation of the candidates “because we do not have many counsellors in the school system to offer the necessary support systems that will bring the affected students back to normalcy”.

Trauma

“The association holds the view that most of the pupils who may not have seen the leaked papers will be traumatised,” a statement signed by the acting General Secretary of GNAT, Mr M.V.V.K. Demanya, said.
WAEC, on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 cancelled the questions for five subjects in the BECE. They are Papers 2 of English Language, Religious and Moral Education, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Social Studies.

Discovery

The cancellation followed the discovery that those papers had leaked, and the integrity of the examination had been compromised. The leaked papers have been rescheduled for June 29 and 30, 2015. This means the candidates will rewrite the five papers, English Language 2, Religious and Moral Education 2, Integrated Science 2, Mathematics 2 and Social Studies 1 and 2 in two days.
Fourteen persons, including three junior high school pupils, have been arrested in connection with the leak.
GNAT, the statement said, condemned in no uncertain terms
