GHLA, KMA commission library in Krofrom

The Ghana Library Authority (GHLA) and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have joined forces to promote reading habits in Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi, with the construction and commissioning of a modern library facility for the densely populated community.

The facility has two auditoriums, 45 shelves, 34 library tables, 200 library chairs and a museum that holds a cultural and artistic value that will reflect the life and works of people.

Project

The project was in fulfilment of a promise made by the GHLA, the KMA and the Ministry of Education to upgrade structures in the Krofrom school complex for it to become an international library of excellence in the Kumasi metropolis.

Deputy Minister

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adu-Twum called for a paradigm shift in the way education was approached if Ghana wanted to compete with advanced countries for equal opportunities.

He said the impartation of knowledge should be done in a fun manner to help pupils and students to easily assimilate information.

Dr Adu-Twum urged parents to be useful partners by encouraging their children to develop the love for reading and building of their capacities.

MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North, Mr Collins Owusu Amankwah, urged people to take advantage of the library and use it in a sustainable way.

He called for the adoption of a maintenance culture to prolong the lifespan of the facility.

KMA boss

The CEO of the KMA, Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, said the assembly was committed to promoting education in the metropolis with a key emphasis on reading and writing.

"We are eager to help our children exceed high in education and assist them to reach their life goals," he said.

GIFEC

The Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications(GIFEC), Mr Abraham Kofi Asante, said over the years, GIFEC has strived to facilitate the provision of universal access to electronic communication for the unserved and underserved communities in the country through the use of affordable information and communications technologies.

He said GIFEC has renewed its long-standing partnership with the GHLA to provide information and communication technology(ICT) equipment and Internet connectivity to regional, district and mobile libraries across the country.

Donations

GIFEC donated 100 laptops to equip a mobile van library which was commissioned simultaneously with the stationary library to promote education in marginalised Communities

“We are elated to announce that GIFEC is providing 50 additional laptops to support the Ghana Library Authority to promote reading amongst Ghanaians,” Mr Abraham Kofi Asante said.

The Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr Hayford Siaw, said the authority was already managing 61 libraries out of which, seven were in Kumasi.

The Tafo Kyidomhene, Nana Boakye Ansah, expressed the hope that the facility will not become a white elephant but will become a resource which will benefit the society.
