The Hope Children’s Village of the Village of Hope at Gomoa in the Central Region received assorted items from the company, comprising educational materials, body wash, bath wash, body creams for kids, hand sanitisers, baby soaps, detergents and some food items.

The same range of products were sent to another orphanage at Apeguso in the Volta Region.

The Assistant Marketing Manager of Ghandour Cosmetics Limited, Mrs Abigail Neequaye Yeboah, said the donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards the less privileged in society.

Ghandour Cosmetics Limited has provided a superior range of skin and hair care products in West Africa for the past 15 years, employing over 600 Ghanaians in its Accra base. It also has operations in Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso and The Gambia.

Exceptional care

The Managing Director of Hope Children’s Village, Mr Kwaku Sarkodie, told the Daily Graphic that the home was quite distinct from what pertained in other orphanages in the country because they adopted the natural family setting to ensure that the children had a holistic upbringing.

“Village of Hope is a family-based home. It means that once we pick the child, we continue to take care of the child up to the tertiary level after which the child becomes independent. There is a legally married couple in every home here. We beg them to come and stay in the home to take care of the children. Each couple takes care of an average of 14 children,” he said.

Mr Sarkodie explained that what had sustained the home for the past 21 years was the fact that they were able to account and manage every donation that came to the home.

“What has kept us going over the years is our ability to account for every pesewa, all the things you see around here are through donor support. In caring for the children we want to be exceptional. One day don’t call me, just come and see for yourself,” he added.

The orphanage

The Hope Children’s Village, he explained, was a project of the Church of Christ Ghana which extends support for the infrastructural needs of the home. Corporate organisations, however, support the operational running of the home.

It currently has 10 residential children’s homes where the physical, emotional, nutritional and spiritual needs of about 123 children are being provided every day.

Shedding light on some of the challenges of running the home, Mr Sarkodie said although it was exciting, it was also challenging raising children from different backgrounds to be responsible adults.

“It has been exciting but challenging in terms of raising them. We are raising children with different backgrounds, some with both parents dead, others on the street who were prone to vices,” he added.

Trying to bring all of them together to become like brothers and sisters is not easy especially in the first eight months. Sometimes you have to use small force to let them calm down,” he said.
