Ghanaian doctor honoured in the US

Dr George Cleland, a US-trained Ghanaian medical practitioner based in Athens, Georgia, has been presented with the Elbertonian Award by the National Association of Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP), Elbert County branch, a national umbrella association for African Americans in the USA.

At a ceremony in Athens, Mr John Clark, the President of NAACP, congratulated Dr Cleland for his exemplary service in the medical profession and for providing exceptional medical care to patients in North East Georgia.

Dr Cleland was educated at the Ghanata College at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, where he obtained his O’Level and then proceeded to Sekondi College for his ‘A’ levels’. He left Ghana for the USA in 1979 to pursue further studies at the University of Georgia, Athens, leading to degrees in Human Nutrition and Metabolism.

He then gained admission to the Medical College of Georgia-Augusta where he successfully completed his medical course.

He has since practiced General Internal Medicine in Elberton and Athens. Dr Cleland’s medical clinic is affiliated to the Athens Regional Medical Centre and the St Mary’s Healthcare System, both in Athens.
