Work on Tema Motorway roundabout interchange 51% complete — Roads Minister

Work on the $57 million Tema Motorway roundabout interchange project is about 51 per cent complete, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has said.

The project, being financed under the Japanese government’s grant scheme and through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is to ease the traffic congestion in the area.

The road connects Accra and Tema to Togo, as well as the Akosombo stretches, and they are all expected to be completed in June 2020.

It is part of the West African Corridor Development Growth Ring Master Plan implementation, which is being executed by Messrs Shimizu-Dai Nippon Joint Venture (SDJV), with CTI Engineering International Co. Ltd as consultants.

Minister

The minister, who led the Japanese Minister for Infrastructure, Land and Tourism, Mr Sujan Chinoy, on a tour of the facility last Monday, told the Daily Graphic that the progress of works had met the expectation of the government.

He indicated that while they had a minor challenge with the new railway lines under construction interjecting portions of the road along the Ashaiman roundabout-Akosombo stretch, the ministry was in consultations with the Ministry of Railway Development to find a solution to the challenge for the seamless continuation of works.

Progress

Already, the project has seen various bridges being raised to accommodate the three tier passage linking the various highways connected to the roundabout.

Work on an underpass being constructed on the Tema-Aflao stretch of the roundabout has also progressed steadily.

Managers expressed the hope that they would be able to complete the project on schedule.

Mr Amoako-Atta commended the team for the work that had been done so far and said he remained hopeful that the partnership between Ghana and Japan would be further strengthened.
