St John Ambulance Ghana has organised a volunteer breast cancer awareness and screening programme to promote early detection and encourage preventive health care among staff, volunteers and members of surrounding communities.
The programme, held on last Wednesday, attracted participants, who took part in breast cancer screening and health education.
Community reach
The initiative brought together staff and volunteers of St John Ambulance Ghana, members of organisations within its catchment area, traders at Tema Station and artisans at the Accra Arts Centre.
The organisation said the programme formed part of its efforts to strengthen community health education and improve public understanding of breast cancer, particularly the importance of early detection and timely medical attention.
Three dedicated areas were established to facilitate the activities.
They comprised a breast cancer screening room, a sensitisation area for health education and a demonstration zone for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The screening room provided participants with a designated space for breast cancer screening, while the sensitisation area focused on breast cancer awareness, early detection and the importance of seeking appropriate medical care when necessary.
The CPR demonstration zone complemented the breast cancer activities by introducing participants to basic life-saving techniques and highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness.
The programme was facilitated by the Chief Educators of St John Ambulance Ghana in partnership with officers from the Ghana Health Service.
The collaboration brought together expertise in health education and public health to support the screening and awareness activities.
The organisers said extending the programme beyond the organisation’s staff and volunteers to traders, artisans and members of other organisations was intended to broaden the reach of its health promotion efforts.
The initiative also demonstrated the value of community-based health interventions in providing accessible health information and encouraging members of the public to take an active interest in their health.
