Sai Bioenergy Ghana Private Limited, in partnership with the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat (24H+ Authority), is developing a 1,500-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant with a 250-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system at Buipe in the Central Gonja District in the Savannah Region.
The proposed project will also include a 1,000-tonne-per-day compressed biogas/liquefied bio-methane plant and plantations for Napier Grass and other energy crops.
The facilities, together with plantations for Napier Grass and other energy crops, have been planned to cover an area of 35,041.70 hectares.
Phased development
The solar PV plant is expected to be developed in three phases of 100MW, 500MW and 900MW.
The battery energy storage system will be constructed during the first phase of the project.
The proposed development will be undertaken through two separate special purpose vehicles, with Sai Bioenergy Ghana Private Limited identified as the main project proponent.
Public concerns
A scoping notice for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been issued to inform the public about the proposed project.
The notice urged persons with an interest, concern or special knowledge relating to the potential environmental effects of the project to submit their concerns.
