Prof. Seidu Alidu: Changing lives in Tamale Central Constituency

True leadership is not only measured by promises made during campaigns, but by lives touched, opportunities created and development projects delivered.

In Tamale Central, Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu, who was sworn into office on October 21, 2025, a little over a year now as the Member of Parliament for the melting point of politics in the north, Tamale Central, has worked hard to turn his commitment into action through people-centred initiatives that empower the youth, support women, improve healthcare, strengthen education and transform communities.

From human empowerment to potable water, healthcare, roads, education and job creation, his development agenda reflects a clear determination to make a meaningful difference in the lives of his constituents.

Interventions

Prof. Alidu, in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, said empowering people was most powerful when it created lasting opportunities and changed livelihoods.
He mentioned the Lebgimsim Enterprise Fund, under which he said GH¢120,000 had been disbursed to the first cohort of 60 women to help them grow their businesses, improve household incomes and contribute more meaningfully to their families’ economic wellbeing.

Prof. Alidu also said he intended to equip about 20,000 young men and women by 2030, under a Skills and Innovation Academy programme to prepare them to compete confidently in an increasingly demanding world.

Recognising sports as a pathway to opportunity, the MP said he had also partnered some European football scouts to identify talented young men and women in the constituency for trials and international exposure.

“This initiative could open doors to professional football careers and life-changing opportunities. It shows a commitment not only for immediate support, but to opportunities that can shape futures,” he added.

Access to potable water

Access to clean water is fundamental to health, dignity and community development. It is for this reason that Prof. Alidu initiated 15 borehole projects across the constituency.

So far, three have been commissioned in Gumbihini North, Aboabo and Changli Electoral areas, while the remaining projects are about 90 per cent complete.

“For communities where reliable water access remains a challenge, these projects represent a major step towards reducing household burdens and improving everyday life,” he said.

On healthcare, Prof. Alidu said “a healthier constituency is a stronger constituency,” and thus so far, he had supported some hospitals with essential equipment, including NHIS registration and renewal of NHIS for citizens across all 18 electoral areas in the constituency, and payment of medical bills for more than 50 constituents

Also, 10 health facilities are to be connected to solar power.

“These interventions reflect a commitment to making healthcare more accessible, affordable and reliable for the people of Tamale Central,” Prof. Alidu said.

Road infrastructure, drainage

The MP has inspected and supported the continuation of inner-city road projects serving Gumbihini South, Gumbihini North and the Agric–Mohiyabihi Electoral areas.

In addition, drainage infrastructure works in the Lamakara Electoral Area are ongoing to improve water flow to address drainage challenges and improve mobility, support local economic activity and create safer, more accessible communities.

Prof.  Alidu has also made education a central pillar of his constituency development agenda through examination support, school infrastructure and rendering of financial assistance to students and parents.

In the last BECE exams, he said more than 1,800 candidates were supported, including the organisation of extra classes, provision of mathematical sets to more than 1,800 students, and offering of transport stipends to help candidates to be present at examination centres.

“This support eased the burden on families and gave students a better opportunity to focus on their examinations,” he said.

The MP also inaugurated a three-classroom block, complete with a staff common room and office for the Salafiya Islamic School, Gumbihini, while work on a fully furnished six-classroom block for Farukiya Islamic School, Changli, is awaiting commissioning.

A six-classroom block has also been commissioned at the St. Paul’s Junior High School, Gumbihini.

Financial support

The MP has also paid school fees for more than 100 tertiary students and provided financial support to parents whose children are pursuing senior high school education, including payment of fees for medical students within the constituency.

Also, school furniture has been distributed to more than 10 schools in the constituency, with a target of distributing up to 4,000 pieces of furniture over the next 12 months.

Prof. Alidu explained that such interventions demonstrated an understanding that educational development required not only classrooms, but also practical support for students and their families.

On job creation, the MP has helped secure more than 150 job opportunities for constituents across various sectors, including Arabic instruction, the Ghana Revenue Authority, Minerals Commission, National Identification Authority, Forestry Commission, teaching and non-teaching roles, nursing, security services and other public service positions.

“Each opportunity represents more than employment; it represents hope, dignity and a pathway to a better future,” he said.

The affable former Head of Political Science Department of the University of Ghana continues to endear himself to his constituents, and the nation at large in national discourse on Television and Radio with clarity, confidence and simplicity.
