President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
The session is focused on strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across the continent.
The high-level summit held yesterday was led by the President of Angola, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who is also the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
The summit's primary agenda is to consider and adopt a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan, and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution for the continent.
The African leaders aim to assess existing continental peace and security frameworks and agree on concrete measures to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation, and financing of both the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
The gathering of Heads of State and Government takes place against a backdrop of complex and mounting security challenges across the continent, including Sudan, Eastern DRC, the Sahel Region, the Horn of Africa, and Mozambique.
President Mahama and fellow African heads of state are expected to forge actionable strategies during the session to bolster regional stability and reinforce the continent's collective capacity for peacebuilding.
