Offices for Odorkor Police Command inaugurated

Two office buildings for the Odorkor Divisional Police Command and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Divisional Command have been inaugurated in Accra.

The Divisional Command building is a renovated facility, while the other one was constructed from scratch and has been named the Oppong-Boanuh Investigations Centre after the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The projects, initiated by the Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Baffour Nyamekye Appenteng, and the District Commander, Superintendent of Police Douglas Kumah, were undertaken with financial and technical support from Zen Petroleum and other companies operating in the jurisdiction of the command.

The two buildings have given the division a facelift, rewriting the script for personnel of the command, who, until the renovation and construction of the respective offices, had to work in cramped conditions in a makeshift structure.

Apart from office equipment, there are offices for the Divisional Commander and the Station Officer, along with storerooms for safekeeping of exhibits, washrooms and work space for investigators.

Public support

The Director General, Welfare, of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maame Yaa Tiwa Addo-Danquah, performed the ceremonial inauguration on behalf of the IGP, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, and said it was part of efforts to resolve the logistic constraints of the Ghana Police Service.

She commended the companies and individuals who supported the projects, and said effective policing and contemporary crime prevention strategies remained the collective responsibility of the police and the public.

"The police can only be effective when they receive the needed support and cooperation from the public," she said.

She urged the public to support the police with information to assist with the fight against crime, saying "without credible information from the public, the police will be rendered ineffective".

Appeal

The Odorkor Divisional Commander said the projects were initiated based on an appraisal that found gaps in the operational structures and administrative requirements of the division.

Mr Appenteng said the lack of office accommodation affected personnel in the effective discharge of their duties.

Currently, he said, the division lacked a means of transport, which was affecting the response time to emergencies.

He, therefore, appealed to the IGP to consider the division when vehicles were being allocated to some police units.

The Odorkor District Command said the Oppong-Boanuh Investigations Centre, which had office space for investigators, would enhance policing in the jurisdiction.

The Retail Director of Zen Petroleum, Mr Prince Awuley, said the support was in line with the company's corporate social responsibility strategy to give back to the community.

"It is important to contribute towards building a strong and well-equipped police service because well-equipped police work better for the benefit of society, and we can conduct our business safely," he said.
