A newborn baby boy has been rescued after he was allegedly abandoned near an unfinished building at Sombo in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.
The baby was found in a bush, struggling to breathe, with his umbilical cord still attached and flies swarming around him.
The baby boy was discovered by community members at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026, and rushed to the Sombo Health Centre, where nurses are providing him with medical care.
The Assembly Member for the Sombo Electoral Area, Seidu Abubakari, who confirmed the incident, said he rushed to the scene after receiving a telephone call about the discovery.
He said upon arriving at the scene, he observed what appeared to be the footprints of a baby, as well as signs suggesting that the mother had struggled on the floor of the unfinished building before and after delivery.
According to him, the circumstances at the scene suggested that the woman might have been accompanied by another person.
Mr Abubakari said the baby was subsequently taken to the Sombo Health Centre for medical attention.
He added that he had contacted the police and environmental health officers to report the incident and facilitate the necessary investigations.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and support efforts to protect vulnerable members of the community.
