New Juaben South Assembly undertakes major desilting of drains
The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly (NJSM) in the Eastern Region has commenced major desilting exercises to reduce the incidence of flooding this rainy season.
The exercise was undertaken around the Appenteng Hall area road and other parts of the municipality. It focused on desilting choked drainage systems and weeding medians to improve local sanitation.
Plastic materials
A team comprising officials from the assembly, Zoomlion, school cadets from SHS and residents cleared refuse from lanes and desilted a heavily silted drain.
The drainage systems, which stretch from the Apenteng Hall area road through other major areas drainage systems within the municipality, have been desilted since the choked drainage systems make it difficult for flood waters to move freely after heavy rainfalls.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, the New Juaben South Municipal Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Patrick Mensah, said sand from Obuotabri Mountain had been the major cause of choked drainage systems in the area in the rainy season.
Collaboration
Mr Mensah emphasised that the assembly would continue to collaborate with other relevant stakeholders to strengthen drainage systems in the municipality to improve sanitation and build a more resilient and flood-resistant city.
He emphasised that the assembly prioritised safeguarding the city from flood risks, stressing that flooding in the area would now be a thing of the past.
Mr Mensah advised the public to desist from dumping waste into drains, saying such practices contributed significantly to flooding and environmental degradation and added that the assembly would not tolerate such actions.
The Deputy District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation of the area, Ebenezer Akoree, called on residents to adopt proactive environmental habits to prevent flooding.
