Man in police grip for assaulting cop

A 22-year-old man, Osman Amadu, is in the grip of the Kaneshie Police for allegedly spraying a substance into the eyes of a policewoman during an operation to enforce the restriction on movement order at Zongo Junction in Accra.

The suspect, a scrap dealer, is said to have pulled out a plastic bottle containing the substance which he sprayed into the eyes of the policewoman when she stopped a taxi with Amadu on board at a checkpoint to find out why he was out during the restriction on movement period.

Assault

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said the suspect had since been charged for assaulting a public officer in violation of the Restriction of Imposition Act, and would be put before court soon after investigations.

According to her, at about 9 a.m. on April 10, 2020, the policewoman, whose name had been withheld, was on duty at the Zongo Junction to ensure compliance with the restriction on movement and stay-at-home directives.

No provocation

In line with that, the policewoman stopped a taxi with Amadu on board and questioned Amadu about his movement but he became furious. Without any provocation, Mrs Tenge said Amadu sprayed a liquid substance which was in a small plastic bottle into the eyes of the policewoman, thus blinding her completely.

The policewoman shouted for help which attracted her colleagues and other witnesses who went to her aid.
Amadu was immediately arrested and taken to the Kaneshie Police Station for investigations while the unknown substance has since been sent to the forensic laboratory for examination.

Mrs Tenge said Amadu, during interrogation, admitted the offence and said he did not know what came over him.

She said he had since been charged for assault on a public officer and violation of the Restriction of Imposition Act, and would be put before court.

The policewoman who was taken to the Police Hospital with swollen red eyes has been referred to an eye specialist for further treatment.
