The Shai-Osudoku District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, in partnership with Golden Exotic, a banana farm at Kasunya, Agrokings and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), has cut the sod for the extension of water supply lines at Kasunya and its environs for the provision of potable water to the beneficiary communities.
The water project, expected to be completed in March, 2027, will serve Kasunya and satellite communities including Lubuse, Gesikope, Klebuse, Busakope, and Dzogbedi all in the Kasunya enclave.
Addressing the beneficiary communities at the sod-cutting ceremony held at Kasunya last Friday, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Shai-Osudoku, Ignatius Godfred Dordoe, said Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 focused on the sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.
He stressed that access to safe water for the people of Kasunya and its adjoining communities was, therefore, not a luxury but a basic necessity for healthy and productive living.
Mr Dordoe said for many years, the residents of Kasunya had faced challenges with accessing potable water, explaining that the situation placed a burden on households, particularly women and children who had to travel long distances in search of water.
"The beginning of this project, therefore, serves as a major step towards addressing the challenge of water in these communities," he said.
Mr Dordoe noted that the Shai-Osudoku District Assembly was committed to ensuring equitable development in the district.
"For the sake of clarity, let me inform you that the Assembly is constructing a CHIPS Compound within the Osudoku enclave.
We have one at Klebuse and we are also planning for one at Agbekotsekpo, as well as a teacher’s bungalow at Tokpo and Agortor.
In the same way, we are building a 6-unit classroom block at Osuwem. All these are in the Osudoku enclave, so why the criticism?
Scholarship
The Legal and Corporate Affairs Manager of Golden Exotic, Mark Achel, who represented the manager, said issues of Kasunya, its host community, were dear to the company and would always support and champion development projects in the community.
He said the company, as part of its corporate social responsibility and commitment, established a scholarship scheme for the Kasunya community to access tertiary education and appealed to parents who were not aware to take advantage of it for their wards who had qualified to access higher education.
The Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Godwin Elikem Kotoku, said once the extension was done, CWSA would make provision for households who were willing to apply and have the water services extended to their facilities.
"CWSA is going to ensure that the water you are given is sustainable and be available at any time you visit the tap to access water", Mr Kotoku assured.
The Paramount Chief of the Osudoku Traditional Area, Nene Kweku-Otiti Animle Vll, who chaired the programme, urged the Assembly and its partners to ensure the project was completed on time.
He also entreated the Assembly to speed up work on the proposed College of Education for the Osudoku State, stressing "we have more land than necessary for the project".
