ICU-Ghana General Secretary among Africa’s most influential persons

The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU-Ghana), Morgan Ayawine, has been honoured as one of Africa’s Most Influential Persons for 2026.

He was honoured at the 3rd Africa Most Influential Personalities Conference and Awards in Kigali, Rwanda.

Mr Ayawine, known for his influential leadership and advocacy in trade unionism, corporate governance, and government policy direction, was selected among Africa’s 100 Most Influential Personalities based on his leadership and advocacy in trade unionism, among others, aimed at promoting socioeconomic development, business growth, and industrial advancement.

His influence and advocacy have contributed to preventing the transfer of strategic national assets to private investors and facilitated the recapitalisation of many State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) that might otherwise have collapsed.

As the leader of a union representing a significant number of workers in industry, banking, finance, commerce, hospitality, public boards and corporations, the informal sector and other sectors of the Ghanaian economy, Mr Ayawine has maintained a constructive relationship with employers and government.

His efforts have contributed to industrial harmony and a conducive working environment in the country, thereby supporting sustainable business practices and socioeconomic stability.

Representatives of the pan-African group, Business Executive Group, organisers of Africa’s Most Influential Persons Awards, last Wednesday presented the award package, made up of a medal, memento, citation and a book, to Mr Ayawine at the ICU-Ghana Head Office, Hall of Trade Unions, in Accra, given that he was unable to attend the Kigali conference owing to other engagements outside the country.

Present at the presentation were the leadership, management and staff of ICU-Ghana.

Context

Mr Ayawine’s recognition among the 100 Most Influential Persons in Africa for 2026 does not come as a surprise to those familiar with his leadership and contributions to organised labour and national development.

It marks a fitting recognition of his dedication and influence, given his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the right things are done in the interest of the country and humanity.

Excerpts of the citation accompanying the award read: “In recognition of your exceptional leadership, remarkable achievements and valuable contribution to the growth and development of Africa; your dedication, integrity and commitment to excellence exemplify the true spirit of eminence and inspire positive impact within society”.

Background

Earlier in the year, Mr Ayawine received similar recognitions and awards from Ghana Development Awards 2026 for Outstanding Contribution to Labour Rights and Industrial Harmony for National Development in March 2026, and a continental award organised in Zambia as Africa’s Most Respected CEO in Labour and Union Leadership in August 2026, also conferred on him by The Business Executive.

In brief remarks after he received the award, Mr Ayawine attributed the recognition to the unwavering support he had received from the leadership, management, staff and rank and file of the union, as well as its social partners.

He expressed appreciation to all for their collaboration and support, saying, “I look forward to your continued partnership for our mutual benefit and the advancement of our shared objectives.”
